ZMT International Summer School in Senegal: Applications now open!

ZMT International Summer School in Senegal: Applications now open!

With support from the Volkswagen Foundation, the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) is organizing an international summer school on the “Ecology of Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (EBUS)”. It is aimed at PhD candidates and postdocs from German and African universities.

The six-day, English-language summer school will take place in Saint-Louis, Senegal, from April 25 to May 1. In addition to lectures by intentionally renowned experts on EBUS from Africa, Europe and the US, the summer school includes interactive workshops and sessions with a focus on cross-disciplinary discussions between participants.

The different events will deal with physical, biogeochemical and ecological processes in the four major coastal upwelling areas in the ocean – the Benguela Current System, the Humboldt Current System, the California Current System, and the Canary Current System.

The aim is to assess the role of these highly productive systems within the global climate, as they provide around one fifth of the world’s marine fish catch and secure livelihood and food in many countries.
Scientists will focus on the noticeable similarities of the four EBUS, while at the same time using the significant differences concerning their structure, key processes, and productivity to understand the reaction of the systems to global change phenomena and their impact on global processes.

A poster presentation and a social programme will complement the scientific sessions, which also serve to build a network that stimulates future collaborations between all participants.

PhD candidates and postdocs from African and German universities research institutions and young researchers whose study focus is on one of the four EBUS can apply to the summer school.

The application including a motivation letter and a short CV should be sent to Dr. Ana Rei, Postdoc in the work group Fisheries Biology at the ZMT.
