Excursion to fossil coral reefs

Currently ZMT geologist Hildegard Westphal and Till Hanebuth from the Department of Geosciences at the University of Bremen are introducing 15 students into the ecology of 10 million years old coral reefs. The training is taking place on the Balearic Island of Mallorca and focuses on the reaction of the fossil ecosystems on the changing sea level and rising salinity of the Mediterranean during the Miocene. For eight days, the students will explore the archives of past environmental changes which are unclosed in the cliffs around the island, and the ecosystem reactions to these changes.
