The scientific library of the ZMT mainly serves as a reference library for the ZMT staff members. Additionally, external users, especially students, are welcome to use the library for their research. The main focus of the library collection is on ecology, marine ecosystems, fisheries biology, coastal management, biogeochemistry, and social sciences.

The collection comprises about 4.000 monographs and 100 running metres of periodical volumes. Currently there are 22 open serial titles. The library also offers access to online journals and databases such as ASFA (Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts). The collection can be searched via the online-catalogue (OPAC). The journals are also recorded in the ZDB, the world’s largest specialized database for serial titles, managed by the German National Library. The library works closely together with other libraries and is a member of the Common Library Network (GBV), and the German Association of Marine Science Libraries and Information Centers (GAMSLIC). The collection of the ZMT library is also searchable in the online-catalogue of the GBV and GAMSLIC plus the Union Catalogue Bremen / Bremerhaven and is associated with the Inter-Library Loan.
