Sino-German Cooperation in Marine Sciences

Since 2004, the ZMT and the University of Bremen maintain a close cooperation in marine sciences together with the Ocean University of China (OUC) in Qingdao. Further cooperation partners are the University of Kiel and the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR).

The bilateral collaboration aims at training of young academics and the facilitation of scientific exchange in education and research. It was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China from 2004 to 2011 in the frame of the Sino-German Initiative in Marine Sciences.

The long-standing activities, which the research institutions in Bremen are also participating in, paved the way for the inauguration of the Center for the Sino-German Cooperation in Marine Sciences (SGMS) on the campus of the OUC in February 2011. Under the umbrella of this institution, previous bilateral educational activities between German and Chinese partners are pooled and will be continued on an ongoing basis. A further important goal consolidating the tie between both countries is the intensification of joint research projects of mutual interest.

The bilateral activities comprise:

  • interdisciplinary, English-language education of master’s students with a Double Degree option
  • annual summer schools and workshops
  • joint supervision of doctoral candidates
  • exchange of guest scientists for joint teaching and research
  • implementation of an Alumni-Network
