This project attempts to realize the goals of GENUS through the quantification of the biological / biogeochemical processes ("biological pump") that influence the exchange of CO2 between the ocean and the atmosphere.
Therefore, it will be necessary to quantify key biogeochemical parameters, such as carbon export, in order to assess the effectiveness of the biological pump under changes in ecosystem structure. Moreover, these are also important parameters, which can be used to verify experimental and modelling results.
The investigation of processes relating to the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) is at the centre of the planned project with particular emphasis on how the biological pump interacts with the OMZ.
