The ZMT offers several possibilities to students and young scientists from all over the world to receive training and education in "real world" problems.
The ZMT is integrated into the curricula of the University of Bremen as well as Jacobs University Bremen.
The institute is also instrumental in the coordination and instruction of several international study programmes, including the Master of Science Programme ISATEC (International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology) and the Sino-German Master Programme in marine sciences, whose degree is recognized by both countries.
Doctoral students, diploma students and MSc students are supervised by ZMT staff and its partners in the tropics. The ZMT coordinates the interdisciplinary Graduate School SUTAS (Sustainable Use of Tropical Aquatic Systems), which is dedicated to socio-ecological issues in tropical coastal regions. The centre is also a supporting institute in the Bremen International Graduate School "Global Change in the Marine Realm", which is an interdisciplinary doctoral programme within the "Excellence Initiative" framework of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG).
