Coastal Habitats

Coral reefs

Coral reefs are among the most diverse and productive habitats of this earth, yet they are also amongst the most endangered. While corals can be found in both cold and warm seas, true reef building corals are only found within the world's tropical belt.

Mangroves

Mangroves are tropical tidal forests on the border between land and sea. They provide shelter to a wide variety of unique organisms. Saltwater tolerant mangrove forests are also an important nursery area for fish, crabs and shrimps.

Seagrass beds

Seagrasses are marine plants, yet are related to grasses found on land. In contrast to kelps, seagrasses possess roots and can flower. They can be found in large quantities along coastal regions.
